A section of I-10 lies in Pensacola Bay after Hurricane Ivan. Ivan's 10 to 15-foot storm surge destroyed thousands of structures across the Alabama and Florida Gulf coast (Photo John Person-2004).

Around 2 a.m. CDT September 16 (0700 UTC), Ivan made landfall on the U.S. mainland in Orange Beach, Alabama as a Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph (190 km/h) winds - more on Ivan
